The Louvre Museum in Paris is closed today following a jewellery robbery earlier this morning.

Details are still emerging, but French media are reporting that three masked men broke into the museum shortly after opening. They reportedly used a goods lift to gain access to the Galerie d’Apollon and appeared to be carrying small chainsaws.

The Galerie d’Apollon houses what remains of the French crown jewels, such as the Hortensia diamond, an orange-pink 20-carat diamond purchased by King Louis XIV.

The thieves managed to steal nine items of jewellery and escaped the Louvre on a scooter. It is unclear yet which items were taken.

A statement on the Louvre’s website reads, “The Louvre Museum will be closed today for exceptional reasons. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
