Plans for King Harald’s sarcophagus began in 2024

The plans for the sarcophagus for King Harald and Queen Sonja were begun in 2024.

In 2024, the government proposed allocating NOK 20 million in project funds to create a sarcophagus for Their Majesties. The sarcophagus will be the final resting place in the Royal Burial Chapel at Akershus Fortress in Oslo.

King Harald and Queen Sonja were involved in the process with the Royal Court, which will ensure the sarcophagus is made in line with tradition.

Snøhetta was chosen as the architectural firm, and the creation of the sarcophagus was already in the early planning stages two years ago.

All members of the Royal House are buried in the crypt, including the King’s parents, King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha.

King Harald died earlier today at the age of 89. The Norwegian royal court said in a statement, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of His Majesty King Harald today. King Harald passed away peacefully at the National Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m.”
